La`au Kanahiku Kumamawalu.....78th Plant
Torch Ginger, `Awapuhi Ko`oko`o
Phaeomeria magnifica
The Torch Ginger remains in my thinking one of the most
splendid plants or flowers. The ginger towers to heights of
20 feet. The flowers burst in reds, and pinks, and yellows,
the size of melons. The plant is not common in Hawaii; mostly
one sees it cultivated, but it has escaped into the forest too.
P. magnifica is native to Indonesia.
