La`au Kanaha Kumama`ono.....46th Plant
Pineapple, Hala Kahiki, Abakashi
Ananas comosus
All bromeliads are believed native to South and Central America,
and this is the one that made Hawaii famous for its fresh fruit
and juice. Pineapples were once grown mostly in Hawaii for world
consumption, but now production has moved elsewhere: Phillipines,
South-East Asia, and Central America. The enzyme bromelaine, found
mostly in the fresh fruit, is stated as having some promising
medical applications with regard to reducing the risk of heart
disease.
